The San Diego's first major action of the war was the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands 26.10.1942.
Where she contributed to a ferocious air defense that turned a tactical Japanese Victory into a crippling strategic defeat.
The San Diego went on to win fifteen battle stars for her service and was the first allied ship to enter Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender.
Amazingly she never took a direct hit throughout the war and didn't lose a single crewman.
